  8. Conserve water heat by insulating your water heater
  9. Change your furnace and air conditioning filters monthly
  10. Install low-flow plumbing fixtures

General Home Tips

  • Have your furnace and ductwork inspected annually
  • Loose, broken AC ductwork accounts for 15-35% of a home’s energy loss
  • Caulk, seal, and weather-strip openings from your home to the outside
  • Unless it is equipped specifically for home heating, use your fireplace sparingly. Warm air escapes through the chimney. Close the damper when you're not using your fireplace.

Creative Use of Vegetation

  • Planting shrubs, bushes and vines next to your house creates dead air spaces that insulate your home in both winter and summer.
  • Make sure to allow at least 1 foot of space between full-grown plants and the walls of your home.

Plant a deciduous shade tree near your home (to the south and/or west) to control the amount of heat that reaches your house in summer.

Weatherizing

  • Repair and weather-strip air leaks in your home. About 10-25% of energy used to cool homes escapes via leaks.
  • Increase your attic insulation if the joists are showing. Recommended level: R-49 in our climate.

Your Thermostat

  • Install a programmable thermostat; set it to automatically use less energy when you are away (workday, vacations, etc...)
  • When you're home and using A/C, set your thermostat to 78║. In cold weather, set it to 68║. Set it back further at night while you're asleep - and use an extra blanket!
  • Install ceiling fans to circulate and mix air throughout the house.
  • Maintain consistent temperatures.

    Summer Savers

  • Hang laundry outside to dry. Use the dryer's cool, fluff cycle to soften any stiffness.
  • Use a microwave instead of a conventional oven.
  • Avoid using heat-producing appliances such as ovens or dryers during the hottest parts of the day.
  • Winter Savers

  • Encourage members of your household to layer clothing rather than turn up the heat.
  • Take shorter showers. Open bathroom doors after taking a shower to allow warm, moist air to circulate.
